Lead Software Engineer, Event Architecture
Location: San Francisco, CA

The Platform Services team at Salesforce is looking for a lead, full stack engineer to help architect and implement a new Event-driven architecture to comprehensively and completely capture data changes in the Salesforce ecosystem. As a team, we offer our customers a reliable, scalable and secure stream of real-time events used for use cases such as data extraction, data replication and data synchronization. We continually innovate in order to improve the performance, scalability, reliability, and breadth of this service to anticipate and meet customer needs.

You’ll be directly responsible for delivering a robust and efficient framework that’s able to capture, store and consume change data from Billions of daily transactions in Salesforce. You’ll also be defining and evangelizing the events framework for all development teams at Salesforce as we expand the functionality of the framework. You’ll be responsible for all of the above and more. This includes technical and architectural reviews for many teams, cross functional product reviews with product managers and customers, releasing generic event model frameworks, and usage guidelines for new and existing products.

To accomplish this, we need smart people to solve hard problems. We are looking for experienced hands-on software developers to define and implement our applications, platform, and core infrastructure. Everything we develop runs in real-time, at cloud scale, supporting hundreds of millions of requests through our API and our UI. This creates technical challenges that require innovation at scale. A large part of our architecture is driven by metadata in our multi-tenant environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Architect, design, implement and build robust features that perform at scale in a multi-tenant environment.
  • Work on challenging problems around massive amounts of data and tackle scale and performance concerns right from the start.
  • Define best practices, build and evangelize frameworks for event-driven application development for all of Salesforce.
  • Resolve technical issues and provide strategy for existing applications.
  • Master our development process, culture and code base, and then improve it.
  • Participate in architectural initiatives, balancing long-term velocity with short-term customer needs.

Required Experience/Skills:

  • Professional track record of being a top performer in current and past roles.
  • Thorough understanding of software architecture and object oriented design.
  • Deep knowledge of Java and the JVM.
  • Good knowledge of SQL and understanding of relational databases.
  • Good knowledge of network i/o programming.
  • Experience building highly scalable, distributed message processing systems.
  • Understanding of consistency tradeoffs (ACID/BASE) in distributed systems.
  • Experience with web services and have understanding of security techniques and asynchronous processing.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects against deadlines.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Sciences or equivalent field, plus 10+ years of relevant experience in the job offered, or as a Software Architect, or related software development occupation.

Desired Experience/Skills:

  • Asynchronous message processing and transport experience.
  • Experience with distributed stream processing platforms such as Kafka, Storm or Spark.
  • Big Data and Hadoop experience.
  • PL/SQL and Oracle tuning experience.
  • Deep knowledge of REST and the HTTP protocol.
  • Schema and versioning fundamentals, knowledge of Avro, Protocol Buffers or Thrift is a plus.
  • Experience with Agile software development and test-driven development.
  • Master's degree in Computer Sciences or equivalent field.
  • SOAP / XML / JSON.
  • Encryption / SSL / OAuth.
